No Woman Should Give Birth Behind Bars Alone. Pregnancy is one of the most vulnerable experiences a person can go through. Now imagine going through it inside a correctional facility — with no advocate, no support, and no one in that delivery room who is there just for you. That is the reality for thousands of incarcerated mothers every single year. The Mothers Matter Initiative was created to change that. Ascending Angels Health Services brings trauma-informed, full spectrum doula care, childbirth education, and emotional support directly into jails, detention centers, and correctional facilities across Maricopa County — because a mother is a mother no matter where she is.
Why This Program Exists
Nearly 80% of women in local jails are mothers of minor children
Most pregnant women in custody receive little to no emotional support during pregnancy or childbirth
Many enter labor scared, isolated, and completely without advocacy
Continuous doula support reduces cesarean rates, shortens labor, reduces anxiety, and dramatically improves the overall birth experience
Without intervention childbirth in custody becomes traumatic — impacting mothers, babies, and entire family systems for years
These women deserve better. This program makes sure they get it.
What We Provide: During Pregnancy Individual education sessions, birth planning, emotional support, coping strategies, and coordination with existing medical care inside the facility. Every mother knows what to expect, understands her rights, and feels prepared. During Labor & Birth Continuous presence during labor and delivery — comfort support, emotional grounding, encouragement, and real-time advocacy. No mother should be alone in that room. We make sure she is not. After Birth Wellness check-ins, physical recovery education, breastfeeding support when possible, infant bonding guidance, and compassionate support for mothers navigating separation from their baby. Reentry & Continuity Our support does not stop at the facility door. We connect mothers to community doula support after release, parenting resources, healthcare providers, social services, and a post-release care plan.
